Chicago Bears Notes: We're Just 1 Week Away From Football (2024)

Chicago Bears Notes: We're Just 1 Week Away From Football (2)

I’m running into a little bit of car trouble today, so I’m going to try and knock out this set of BN Bears Bullets so I can address that ASAP. Maybe then I’ll have a peaceful afternoon after a hectic morning.

  • The Pro Football Hall of Fame Game kicks off ONE WEEK FROM TONIGHT:
  • I don’t know how much Bears rookies such as Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze will play in the exhibition game. Remember, the Bears have three more preseason contests after this one. In theory, the Bears could use this bonus game to evaluate some different players on the roster by giving them an extended amount of playing time. But selfishly, I’d love to see at least one series for the regulars just to get the rookies’ feet wet.
  • MORE: The Bears Are Cooking Up a Preseason Plan For QB1

  • The early word from Bears camp is that Caleb Williams looks like an upgrade at the quarterback position. I’d sure hope that was the case after trading away Justin Fields and using the first pick on Caleb. That was the whole point of this operation. Nevertheless, I’m very much here for good vibes that the new QB is bringing to Halas Hall. (Sun-Times)
  • This is an astute observation by Greg Braggs:
  • Nice ball security to avoid Montez Sweat here. (Unclear if it's a hold, I don't see a hold. 😂)

But another example of Caleb climbing the pocket, dipping his shoulder, securing the ball, having pocket presence. All readily available from his college tape.

    Good stuff. https://t.co/Y1QU0sp6AL pic.twitter.com/wEYTxYYqWc— Greg Braggs Jr. (@GBraggsJr23) July 24, 2024

  • I expect Caleb Williams is going to get a lesson in ball security during training camp with Montez Sweat bearing down on you during every practice rep this summer.
  • Training camp practices resume at Halas Hall today. Brendan Sugrue (Bears Wire) has four standouts from the early going.
  • ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Yannick Ngakoue has a two-day visit coming up with the Carolina Panthers. Ngakoue just had a workout with the Miami Dolphins before the team brought back Emmanuel Ogbah. There is a part of me that wonders if the Bears don’t have an interest in bringing Ngakoue back in any capacity. And that might be fine. If you like the dudes you have, then don’t mess with it. But there is also a part of my brain that sees this as the Bears allowing Ngakoue to test the market before making an offer. In any case, this is something to monitor.

  • It’s “all systems go” for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, reports old friend JJ Stankevitz. The second-year signal caller’s first year as a pro was cut short due to a shoulder injury, but it sounds like there will be no limitations for Richardson as camp starts. With the Colts being the Bears’ Week 3 opponent, I’ll be curious to see how healthy he looks in the early going.
  • I missed this earlier in the week. But if you’ve been reading us long enough (thanks, by the way — it’s all love) then you already know how much I love the Bucs throwbacks:

  • The folks at Over The Cap have a full breakdown of Christian Darrisaw’s four-year extension with the Minnesota Vikings. Big-money extensions for offensive tackles aren’t on the horizon for the Bears as of this moment. But with Braxton Jones extension-eligible at the end of this year, these contract notes are something to be cognizant of down the line.
  • Aaron Rodgers knew how much he’d get fined … and still missed out on mandatory practices because he really wanted to be in Egypt. I’d suggest that Rodgers stay there forever, but I don’t think the people of Egypt did anything wrong to deserve the bad juju that comes with Rodgers’ looming presence. (Pro Football Talk)
  • Ah, yes. The J. Love extension news we’ve been waiting for all offseason:
  • DB Julian Love and the #Seahawks have agreed on a 3-year extension worth up to $36M, as he cashes in again.

The deal was negotiated by Drew Rosenhaus, Jason Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha. pic.twitter.com/30uPWIr4PZ— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) July 24, 2024

  • Our friends at BN Bulls have the latest on how the NBA is moving forward without Turner Sports being part of its television and media package. Sigh. I hate it. And I hate using the word hate. Ugh. Now I’ve used it three times in two sentences. Bleh. Few things bug me more than when people champion a win for the league (because it gets to make a bunch of money) when it is a clear loss for fans. It’s lame.
